Choosing a matchmaking service in Hong Kong

The questions to ask before you pay a matchmaker in Hong Kong, based on Consumer Council advice, and how we answer each one.

Before you pay a matchmaker in Hong Kong, ask what you get, what you must, and what happens when things go wrong. The Consumer Council has published advice after rising complaints about matching services. Below are the questions that matter, and how Corner Table answers each one.

What does the fee cover, and for how long?

Ask for a written list: number of introductions, whether dates are arranged, coaching, and how long the package lasts. Vague promises of "unlimited" matching are hard to enforce.

Corner Table: no package and no subscription. You pay HK$188 each when a date is confirmed. There is no fee for your first date. The fee is for the introduction and the booking only.

Which of my criteria are musts, and which are preferences?

The Council advises you to say clearly what is mandatory and what is optional, and to keep a record. If a salesperson over-promises, the contract is what counts.

Corner Table: you tell Juno your must-haves in the interview. Structured must-haves are checked in both directions before anyone is introduced. We never promise that every preference will be met.

What do you check about members?

Ask exactly what is verified: identity, age, photos, relationship status. Big words like "vetted" often hide a short list.

Corner Table: identity and age, real photos looked at by a person, and a signed statement that you are single. We do not run criminal or marriage records. Full list.

What if I need to cancel or the other person does not show?

Read the refund and credit rules before you pay. Ask what happens if the service cannot find anyone for a long time.

Corner Table: you never pay for a date that did not happen through no fault of your own. If there is nobody for you one week, you pay nothing that week. Cancellation and strike rules are in the terms.

Manage expectations

Finding someone who fits takes time. No honest service can promise a match. We promise the work: one careful introduction a week when we have one, a person checking it, and a booked table when you both say yes.
